When I was at physical therapy on Thursday Charlie (Cadence Physical Therapy - go see him!) asked if I had blogged lately. My answer was no because I haven’t had anything to say. Or more accurately, I don’t have anything I actually want to talk about.
Until today I had not run for one day short of 2 weeks. I suspected Pes Anserine and my PT thinks that it probably the situation we are faced with – unless it’s a stress fracture. That seems unlikely as the pain is high in my tibia and only hurts when I run, but still a possibility.
Charlie had been treating me this week. I got to try running today. 2 minutes of running and 2 minutes of walking alternating for 2 miles was the plan. I managed one mile and I was in pain every time I ran. This is not the results I wanted.
My frustration is that I have always tolerated high mileage and been relatively injury free. Since the sports hernia diagnosis it seems like I am injured constantly and that it is always on the side with the hernia. My gut feeling is the hernia is causing the weakness in my left hip that is leading to the injuries. Unfortunately, the surgery for a sports hernia is considered elective so unless someone is handing them out for free I am not having surgery. If I am right about the hernia does that mean my running is pretty much done? I worry the answer is yes. I literally lay awake at night worried I am done running competitively.
The good news is that I can swim and bike without pain. I have gone back to the pool and the bike to keep me from losing my mind and gaining a million pounds. I love both, but training for ultras and having so much else going on I just couldn’t fit it in to my schedule. I had to scrap my racing schedule for the fall, but I decided to train for a triathlon. I have never done a half and decided to focus on HITS Havasu. Mark Wilson and his team are amazing and I love Havasu. Hopefully I will be running again by November.
The plan right now is to take another week of off running, keep up the treatment and exercises and see where I am at next weekend.
